'Pottery created
by an acclaimed Orkney-based artist is on display at an Inverness-shire
art gallery.
John Struthers works from his own pottery
on Burray and his creations form part of the latest exhibition at Inchmore
Gallery. Owner Fred Black met the ceramicist during a trip to Orkney in
search of new art and artists for Inchmore.
The collection of works, called Thinking
of a Handle, has been shown in the Pier Art Centre in Orkney and in public
and private collections around the world. Mr Black said: "John's mostly
semi-functional and often abstract pieces evolve from an appreciation of
coastal and marine environments. There are influences from Neolithic and
pre-history artefacts, natural forms and 20th century modernism - all
resources which the Orkney islands offer in abundance."
Mr Struthers is a graduate of Falmouth
School of Art, Leicester University and he is a former teacher. He moved
to Orkney in 1985.'
